Schütte-Lanz
Airships.

In the early 20th century, Mannheim was one of the most important sites of German airship construction. In the district of Rheinau, the Schütte-Lanz company built the airships that competed with the Zeppelins — true engineering pioneers of their time.

Our exhibition presents original parts, technical drawings, factory photographs, and personal documents of engineers and crews. Models illustrate the dimensions of the ships and the challenges of their all-wood construction.

On display

  • Original parts from the Rheinau works
  • Factory and press photographs
  • Construction plans and patents
  • Documents from the estate of Johann Schütte
  • Models of selected SL airship types
An industry that seems forgotten today — yet it began here in Mannheim.
